of each of the Counties and Baltimore City shall forthwith levy and
collect such tax at such rate.

All matters committed by this Act to the discretion of the Board of
Public Works shall be determined by a majority of said Board.

Sec. 7. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1961.

CHAPTER 888
(House Bill 16)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 148 (b)
of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Public Education", sub-title "Chapter 12. County Superin-
tendent of Schools", revising the schedule of salaries for the
several county superintendents of schools in this State.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 148 (b) of Article 77 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Public Education", sub-title "Chapter 12.
County Superintendent of Schools", be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

148.

(b) All county superintendents of schools shall be paid, beginning
with the school year [1954-1955] 1961-1962 on the basis of the
salaries hereinafter specified. The salary of the county superintend-
ent of schools shall not be diminished during his term of office. The
county superintendent of schools shall devote his entire time to public
school business and shall receive such compensation as the county
board of education shall direct, SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OR OF THE COUNTY
COUNCIL; provided that [no county superintendent of schools ap-
pointed under the provisions of this section or continuing in office
under the provisions of this section, shall be paid an annual salary
of less than eight thousand dollars ($8,000); and if a county
superintendent has acted as county superintendent in the State
of Maryland for a period of one year he shall be paid an annual
salary of not less than eight thousand four hundred dollars ($8,400) ;
for the third year of service as a county superintendent in the State
of Maryland, not less than eight thousand eight hundred dollars
($8,800); for the fourth year of service as a county superintendent
in the State of Maryland, not less than nine thousand two hundred
dollars ($9,200); for the fifth year of service as a county superin-
tendent in the State of Maryland, not less than nine thousand six
hundred ($9,600); and for the sixth year of service and each sub-
