At a SESSION of the GENERAL ASSEMBLY
of MARYLAND, begun and held at the City of
ANNAPOLIS on Monday the fixth of November,
in the year of our Lord one thoufand feven hundred
and ninety-feven, and ended the twenty-firft day of
January, feventeen hundred and ninety-eight, the
following LAWS were enacted :

C H A P. I.
An ACT to fettle and afcertain the falary of members of the
council for the enfuing year.

Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That each member of
the council fhall be entitled to receive, for the enfuing year, the fum of
two, hundred pounds current money for his falary.

C H A P. II.

An ACT to alter and change, the. name of Samuel Berry Atchifon,
of Charles county.

WHEREAS Samuel Berry Atchifon, of Charles county, has petitioned
to this general affembly, that an act may pafs to change his name to
Samuel Atchifon, Berry; and it appearing reafonable that the prayer

of the petitioner fhould be granted, therefore,

Preamble.

II. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it fhall and
may be lawful for the faid Samuel Berry Atchifon to take upon himfelf the name
and furname of Samuel Atchifon Berry inftead; of his prefent name and fur-
name, and alfo for the defcendants of the faid Samuel Berry Atchifon to take
upon themfelves the furname of Berry; and the name of the faid Samuel Berry
Atchifon fhall be and is hereby changed and altered into the name of Samuel
Atchifon Berry; and the faid Samuel Berry Atchifon, and the heirs of his body,
fhall at all times hereafter be called by, and hold and ufe, the furname of Berry
only.

III. And be it enacted, That all fecurities, promifes, contracts, affurances,
deeds and lawful acts, whatfoever, heretofore made, or hereafter to be made, by
or to the faid Samuel Berry Atchifon, by the name and furname of Samuel
Atchifon Berry, fhall be of the fame, force and effect, and equally avail, to all
intents and purpofes, as if the name and furname of Samuel Atchifon Berry had
been the true and proper name and furname of the faid Samuel Berry Atchifon
from his birth, any law or cuftom to the contrary notwithstanding.

C H A P. III.

An ACT relating to the militia of Allegany county.
WHEREAS it has been reprefented to this general affembly, that the
citizens of Allegany county are fubjected to great inconveniencies in
being obliged to attend meetings in regiment, owing to local circum-
ftances that peculiarly attach themfelves to faid county; and it appearing juft
and reafonable that the legiflature fhould afford relief, therefore,

II. Be it enacted by the General Affembly of Maryland, That the field officers
now having, or that may hereafter have, the command of the militia of faid
county, be and they are hereby authorifed and empowered to appoint fome day or
days, not exceeding four days in each year, for the perfons competing, or who
