Coroners to
give bond,
&c.

C H A P. XCV.
An ACT relating to coroners.

Be it enacted by the General Affembly of Maryland, That from and after
the firft day of April next, and between the firft days of March and
April in every third year thereafter, every coroner, before he executes any
civil procefs, fhall give bond, or enter into a recognizance to the ftate of Mary-
land, in the penalty of one thoufand pounds, with a condition, that he will well
and truly execute the office of coroner in all things thereto belonging; and fhall
alfo well and faithfully execute and return all writs, or other procefs, to him di-
rected; and fhall alfo pay and deliver, to the perfon or perfons entitled to receive
the fame, all turns of money and tobacco, all goods and chattels, by him levied,

feized or taken, agreeably to the directions of the writ, or other procefs, under
which the fame fhall have been levied, feized or taken; and alfo fhall keep and
detain in fafe cuftody all and every perfon and perfons committed to his cuftody,
or by him taken in execution, or who fhall be committed for the want of bail,
without fuffering them, or any of them, to efcape or depart from his cuftody
and fhall alfo fatisfy and pay all judgments which fhall be rendered againft him
as coroner; and fhall alfo well and truly execute and perform the feveral duties
required of or impofed upon him by the laws of this ftate; which bond or re-
cognizance fhall be entered into before, and attefted by, the chief juftice of the
diftrict, or any affociate juftice of the county, with two diffident fecurities, free-
holders of the county, and fhall immediately after the execution thereof be de-
livered by the faid juftice to the clerk of the county court, to be by him recorded,
and a copy thereof; certified under the feal of the court, fhall be good evidence
to prove the execution of fuch bond in any court of this ftate.

And in cer-
tain cafes to
have the fame
remedy, &c.

II. And be it enacted, That if any coroner, againft whom any judgment fhall
be entered for default in not producing the body of the perfon againft whom pro-
cefs may have been iffued, fhall fatisfy the plaintiff the amount of his debt and
cofts, he fhall have the fame remedy againft the defendant on the plaintiff's
judgment againft him as the plaintiff himfelf might originally have had.

C H A P. XCVI.
An ACT refpecting the dealing and counterfeiting of checks or
orders on banks.
Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That if any perfon or
perfons within this ftate fhall fteal, or take by robbery, any check or
checks, order or orders, drawn on any bank eftablifhed, or that may be
eftablifhed, under a charter from the government of the United States, or of any
particular ftate, it fhall be deemed and conftrued to be felony, of the fame nature
and in the fame degree as if the offender or offenders had ftolen or taken by rob-
bery any other goods of like value with the money due on fuch check or checks,
order or orders, and fuch offender or offenders fhall fuffer fuch punishment as he,
fhe or they, fhould or might have done if he, fhe or they, had ftolen or taken
by robbery other goods of like value with the money due on fuch check or
checks, order or orders.

II. And be it enacted, That if any perfon or perfons fhall, within this ftate?
forge or counterfeit any check or checks, order or orders, on any of the faid
banks, or pay, or tender in payment, or in any manner pafs or offer to pafs, fuch
forged or counterfeited check or checks, order or orders, knowing fuch check or
checks, order or orders, to be forged or counterfeited, and fhall thereof be con-
vided in any court of law within this ftate, he, fhe or they, fhall be adjudged a
felon or felons, and fuffer fuch punifhment as if he, fhe or they, had been ad-
judged guilty of ftealing or taking by robbery goods of the like value with the
money expreffed to be due on fuch check or checks, order or orders.
