relating generally to the occupation of funeral director and em-
balmer in this State.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 345 to 363, inclusive, and Section 366 of Article 43 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition and 1961 Supple-
ment), title "Health", subtitle "Funeral Directors and Embalmers",
be and they are hereby repealed, and that new Sections 345 to 361,
inclusive, are hereby enacted to stand in the place of the sections so
repealed, to read as follows:
845. Qualifications.
Any applicant for licensing as a funeral director and embalmer
must be a person of good moral character, twenty-one years of age
or over, and free from habits liable to interfere with the perform-
ance of the duties of funeral director and embalmer. He must have
had at least two years' practical experience as an apprentice funeral
director and embalmer, under a licensed funeral director and em-
balmer in this State. As an apprentice he must have assisted at
not fewer than twenty funerals and must have assisted in embalming
not fewer than twenty dead bodies. He must also have registered
as an apprentice with the State Board of Funeral Directors and Em-
balmers of Maryland at the time he began his apprenticeship; and
he must have a high school education or the equivalent thereof and
must be a graduate of a regular recognized college of embalming
whose course of instruction is not less than nine months comprising
840 hours of study.
346. Applications and Fees.
A person desiring to be examined and licensed for the occupation
of funeral director and embalmer shall apply to the State Board of
Funeral Directors and Embalmers and submit the sum of $100 to
the Board as an examination fee. For the payment of one examina-
tion fee an applicant shall be entitled to two examinations and no
more. The examination shall be held once annually at a time and
place to be fixed by the Board.
847. Examinations and Fees.
(a) The Board shall examine the applicant as to the proper sani-
tation and disinfection of the clothing and bedding of persons dying
from infectious or contagious diseases and of the premises in which
they died. The examination also shall cover theoretically and prac-
tically the subjects of anatomy, sanitation, disinfection, embalming
and the caring for and preparing of burial and shipment of dead
human bodies. The examination shall also relate to laws and regu-
lations on contagious, infectious and communicable diseases. It shall
also cover the laws of this State, both general and local concerning
burials and burial permits; and the examination shall cover such
other subjects as the Board may deem necessary and proper.
(b) The Board shall issue a license to carry on the business of
funeral director and embalmer in the State of Maryland to any
applicant who passes this examination. The granting of the license
is subject to the prior payment of a fee of $10 therefor. The name
