The Honorable George W. Della nominated the Honorable Mary L.
Nock as temporary presiding officer, which nomination was seconded by
the Honorable Edward S. Northrop. There being no further nominations,
the Honorable Mary L. Nock was unanimously elected temporary presiding
officer.

The Senator from Queen Anne County and the Senator from Caroline
County were appointed to escort the President Pro Tern to the Chair.

The Secretary then administered the oath of office to the President
Pro Tern.

Prayer was offered by the Rev. James F. Madison of Annapolis, Md.

The next order of business was the election of a permanent presiding
officer.

The Hon. Edward S. Northrop nominated the Hon. George W. Della
for President, which was seconded by the Hon. John Clarence North.

On motion of the Hon. Harry T. Phoebus, seconded by Hon. J. Ray-
mond Buffington, Jr., the nominations were closed.

The Roll was then called, which resulted as follows:

Senators:

President, Barrick, Buffington, Dean, Dorf, Dorsey, Gonder, Hall, Hepborn,
Hughes, James, Johnson, Jones, Mach, Malkus, Nock, Mrs., North, Northrop, Parran,
Phipps, Phoebus, Pine, Sanford, See, Shipley, Snyder, Weant, Wheatley. Total—28

The Hon. George W. Della was elected President of the Senate unani-
mously, and the Hon. George W. Della was declared duly elected President
of the Senate.

The Senator from Somerset County and the Senator from Mont-
gomery County were appointed to escort the President to the Chair.

The President announced the appointment of the Hon. Paul A. Dorf,
5th District of Baltimore City, vice Hon. Aaron A. Baer, (resigned).

The President announced that Committee assignments would remain
the same as last Session.

The President also announced the appointment of Hon. Paul A. Dorf,
5th District of Baltimore City, vice Hon. Aaron A. Baer (resigned), to
serve on the standing Committees assigned to Hon. Aaron A. Baer in the
1961 Regular Session of the General Assembly.

On motion of Mr. Buffington, duly seconded, it was ordered that
Senator Bertorelli be excused from today's session due to illness.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE

The Secretary of State appeared and delivered a message from the
Executive.
