L A W S of MARYLAND.

CHAP.
XXXIX.

cafh or effects of the fociety, ART. 28. That if any member or members of
this fociety fhall hereafter be defirous to enlarge his, her or their firft infurances,
and the directors fhall judge that the houfe or houfes infu red, from improvements
made fince the date of fuch infurances, or otherwife, will bear an additional fum,
that then the accounts fhall be made up with fuch member or members, and
their old policy fhall be cancelled, and a new policy or policies granted for the
entire fum to be infured, agreeably to the provifions, limitations and reftrictions,
herein before expreffed. ART. 29. That a public table fhall be kept at the office
of all fees, falaries and rewards, allowed by this fociety, and another public table
of the yearly profits and loffes, which every member may perufe and take notes of
at pleafure. ART. 30. That the direftors fhall have power to reward, out of the
company's ftock, fuch as are voluntarily and particularly active in extinguifhing
fires in dangerous cafes. ART. 31. Upon application made to the directors for
infuring any houfe or building, if, from its fituation, or any other circumftance,
it fhall appear to the directors to be more than commonly hazardous, the direc-
tors for the time being fhall have, and they are hereby declared to have, a dif-
cretionary power, either to enlarge the depofite money required to be paid
for infuring, or wholly to refufe infuring the fame, as they fhall judge fit.
ART. 32. That if any member of this fociety fhall fuffer any damage by
ftoring gunpowder in town, or breaming fhips or other veffels at the wharfs, oc-
cafioned by the act, affent or direction, of fuch member, the inlurance of fuch
member, fo differing damage, fhall thereupon become void. ART. 33. That
to avoid inconveniences, and prevent frauds, no perfon hereafter infuring their
houfes in this office by original policies or renewals, fhall receive benefit from the
fame, if fuch houfe or houfes are or fhall be infured in any other offices. And
whereas the faid fociety have prayed to be incorporated, in order the more fecure-
ly and beneficially to manage and conduct the concerns thereof; therefore,

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That the members
of the faid fociety, and thofe that hereafter fhall become fuch, by figning and
executing the foregoing deed of fettlement and articles of affociation, and by in-
furing in and with the faid fociety, fhall be, and are hereby conftituted and de-
clared to be, one community, corporation and body politic, by the name or ftyle
of The Baltimore Equitable Society for infuring houfes from lofs by fire, and as
fuch fhall have perpetual fucceffion, and capacity to govern, conduct and manage
its bufinefs and concerns, on the principles, agreeably to the rules and articles,
and fubject to the covenants, provifions, limitations and reflrictions, in the faid
deed of fettlement and articles of affociation contained and expreffed, according
to the true intent and meaning thereof.

III. And be it enacted, That the faid fociety, by the corporate name thereof,
fhall be capable in law of fuing and being fued, of pleading and being implead-
ed, of anfwering and being anfwered, in any court or courts of law or equity,
or before any judge or judges, in all and all manner of fuits, complaints, caufes,
matters and demands whatfoever, and all and every other matter and thing therein
and thereto to do and perform, in as full, ample, effectual and beneficial a man-
ner, as any natural perfon or perfons may or can do.

CHAP. XL.
An ACT to appoint an agent for the year one thoufand feven
hundred and ninety-five.
Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That Randolph Brandt
Latimer be agent of this ftate, to execute the truft and power repoied in
him by virtue of this act, from the firft day of January, one thoufand fe-
ven hundred and ninety-five, until the firft day of January, one thoufand feven
hundred and ninety-fix.

rearages, &c.

II. And be it enacted, That the faid agent fuperintend the collection of all
arrearages and balances due from the feveral collectors of the refpeftive counties

within this ftate, appointed fince the firft day of January, feventeen hundred and
