(1) may destroy any contraband articles or goods seized by or de-
livered to said department, after removing any money contained
therein.
(2) shall sell at public auction all lost, abandoned, unclaimed, for-
feited, undistributed contraband, or stolen property, remaining in
the possession of the department for a period of six (6) months
without a lawful claimant.
(b) The Chief of Police shall pay over to the County Treasurer for
the use of the County, all money removed from contraband, all pro-
ceeds of such sales, and all lost, abandoned, unclaimed, forfeited, or
stolen money remaining in the possession of the department for a
period of six (6) months without a lawful claimant.
(10) The County Commissioners of Charles County shall equip
and arm said Charles County Police Force. The County Commis-
sioners of Charles County are hereby authorized, empowered and
directed to purchase equipment including motor vehicles, motorcy-
cles with or without sidecars, radio receiving and sending apparatus,
both for stationary use and for use in and about said motor ve-
hicles, in such number, together with such other police equipment,
as in the judgment of the said County Commissioners may seem ad-
visable for the use of said Charles County Police Department, and
said County Commissioners may from time to time sell, trade or
otherwise dispose of said motor vehicles, or motorcycles, or radio
or other equipment and purchase new vehicles and equipment; and
all equipment, automobiles, or motorcycles purchased under this
subtitle shall be and remain the property of Charles County, and
shall be returned by the members of the police department to whom
said equipment may be issued, upon separation, for any cause, from
said department, and the County Commissioners of Charles County
shall provide for the maintenance and repair of said motor vehicles
and equipment and for the operation of said motor vehicles and
equipment including gasoline, oil, tires, batteries, and accessories
for the same. All equipment now used by the sheriff and by the of-
fice of the committing magistrate of Charles County shall be trans-
ferred to the Police Department of Charles County and the Sheriffs
office shall hereafter consist of the Sheriff and one deputy.
(11) The Police force shall carry and serve all legal papers WAR-
RANTS, SUBPOENAS AND OTHER PAPERS ISSUED FOR
SERVICE IN CRIMINAL MATTERS issued by the CIRCUIT
COURT FOR CHARLES COUNTY AND BY THE Trial Magistrate
of Charles County. THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE SHALL CARRY
AND SERVE ALL PAPERS ISSUED FOR SERVICE IN CIVIL
MATTERS ISSUED BY THE CIRCUIT COURT FOR CHARLES
COUNTY AND BY THE TRIAL MAGISTRATE OF CHARLES
COUNTY. All special deputies are hereby abolished. The Chief of
Police is empowered to appoint special officers to aid in the policing
of amusement places, dance halls, etc., but said special officers shall
have no authority other than on the premises to which they are
specifically assigned. In no event shall they be permitted to wear
uniforms similar to that of the Charles County Police Department.
(12) The members of the Police force except the Chief of Police
shall be subject to the provisions of a Merit System to be estab-
lished by the Board of Police Examiners, and shall be removed only
