674                              Laws of Maryland                      [Ch. 530

FROM TIME TO TIME TO CARRY ON EFFICIENTLY
WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT AND THE NUMBER OF
POLICE EMPLOYEES IN SUCH ADDITIONAL RANKS AND
GRADES SHALL BE SUCH AS THE BUDGET OR BUDGET
AMENDMENT OR AMENDMENTS MAY FROM TIME TO TIME
PROVIDE. SUCH ADDITIONAL RANKS AND GRADES SHALL
BE FILLED ONLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS
OF SECTIONS 8 AND 9 OF THIS ARTICLE. IN ADDITION TO
SAID POLICE EMPLOYEES, THE SUPERINTENDENT SHALL
APPOINT FOR SAID DEPARTMENT SUCH CLERICAL EM-
PLOYEES AS MAY BE REQUIRED FROM TIME TO TIME TO
CARRY ON EFFICIENTLY THE WORK THEREOF AND AS
THE BUDGET OR BUDGET AMENDMENT OR AMENDMENTS
MAY FROM TIME TO TIME PROVIDE, AND SUCH CLERICAL
EMPLOYEES SHALL BE APPOINTED ONLY IN ACCORDANCE
WITH THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION 8 OF THIS ARTICLE.

(c)—Salaries—Salaries to be paid to police employees of the
Department shall be as follows:

Superintendent........................................................................[$8,500] $10,000

Lieutenant Colonel............................................................... $8,500 $8,000

Major ............................................................................................. $6,967

Captain .......................................................................................... $6,333

Lieutenant .................................................................................... $5,758

Detective Lieutenant                                      $5,758

Any police employee receiving the salary hereinbefore specified
for the rank which he holds when this section becomes effective shall
not have such salary reduced by reason of the establishment of the
salary schedule herein prescribed for said rank, so long as he shall
remain incumbent in that rank.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That notwithstanding any-
thing to the contrary in this Act, the new ranks RANK created
in this Act shall take effect and be available as of June 1, 1959, but
any increase in compensation provided herein shall not take effect

until July 1, 1960.

SEC. 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, THAT THE
MONEY REQUIRED TO PAY AN ADJUSTMENT IN SALARIES
AS PROVIDED IN THIS ACT DURING THE FISCAL YEAR BE-
GINNING JULY 1, 1959, SHALL BE TRANSFERRED FROM
SPECIAL FUNDS HELD BY THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR
VEHICLES PURSUANT TO THE PROVISIONS OF SECTION
341 OF ARTICLE 66½ OF THE ANNOTATED CODE OF MARY-
