672                               Laws of Maryland                       [Ch. 529

Edition, being Article 4 of the Code of Public Local Laws of
Maryland), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Police Commis-
sioner", said section having been last amended by Chapter 372 of
the Acts of 1957, increasing certain categories of employees and
police officers in the Police Department of Baltimore City , GIV-
ING A GENERAL AUTHORIZATION FOR THE EMPLOY-
MENT OF CIVILIAN AND CLERICAL EMPLOYEES THERE-
IN AND ELIMINATING SPECIFIC MENTION OF SUCH
CATEGORIES, and relating generally to the number of employees
and police officers therein.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 532 (a) of the Charter and Public Local Laws of Bal-
timore City (1949 Edition, being Article 4 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland), title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Police
Commissioner", said section having been last amended by Chapter
372 of the Acts of 1957, be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

532. (a) The Police Commissioner shall have the power to re-
move any uniformed officer for any violation of any rule or regula-
tion which he may make and promulgate to the Police Department
of Baltimore City. The uniformed police force shall consist of nine
(9) inspectors of police, one to be designated, from time to time,
by the Police Commissioner as Chief Inspector, to be assigned to
such duties as the Police Commissioner may from time to time di-
rect, with full power to the Police Commissioner to change such
Chief Inspector at any time he may desire to do so and appoint an-
other one of the inspectors to the duties of said Chief Inspector; not
more than [fifteen (15)] twenty-one (21) captains; not more than
[eighty-one (81)] ninety-eight (98) lieutenants; not more than
[three hundred eight (308)] three hundred eighty eight (388) ser-
geants; not more than two thousand seven hundred and eighteen
(2,718) patrolmen; two (2) policewomen with the rank of sergeant
and such additional policewomen as may be necessary in the judg-
ment of the Commissioner. The civilian and clerical employees of the
Police Department of Baltimore City may include one (1) super-
visor, Taxicab Bureau; such number of matrons as may be neces-

sary in the judgment of the Police Commissioner; one (1) male
stenographer; three (3) linemen, Telephone and Signal Division;
twenty one (21)
- custodial workers; four -(4)- hostlers; such number
of chauffeurs
as may be deemed necessary in the judgment of the
Police Commissioner; one (1) chief engineer, Marine Division; one
(1) chief machinist; seventeen (17) machinists; one (1) printer
foreman;
one (1) printer; [twenty four (24)] thirty (30) turn-
keys; such number of signal and
telephone operators as may be
necessary in the judgment of the Police Commissioner; five (5)
maintenance laborers; one (1) superintendent, Maintenance of
Buildings; one (1) supervisor, Central Control Records; one (1)
assistant supervisor, Central Control Records; THE CIVILIAN AND
CLERICAL EMPLOYEES OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
SHALL INCLUDE such number of crossing guards as may be neces-
sary in the judgment of the Police Commissioner; such number of
station-house clerks; and such additional clerks and civilian em-
ployees for duty at police headquarters, or elsewhere in the City of
Baltimore, as may in the judgment of the Police Commissioner be
necessary.
