Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Prince George's
County", sub-title "Fire Companies", to follow immediately after
Section 656A thereof, said section having been added by Chapter
788 of 1957 providing for an annual rescue squad tax within the
Tenth Election District (Laurel), outside of the corporate limits
of the Town of Laurel, in Prince George's County, relating to the
disposition of said tax, and providing for a referendum thereon.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 656B be and the same is hereby added to the Code
of Public Local Laws of Prince George's County (1953 Edition, being
Article 17 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title
"Prince George's County", sub-title "Fire Companies", to follow im-
mediately after Section 656A thereof, said section having been added
by Chapter 788 of 1957, and to read as follows:
656B. (a) In addition to any fire tax now levied in said election dis-
trict, there shall be levied and assessed an annual rescue squad tax
in the amount of five cents (5c) upon each $100.00 of the assessed
valuation of the real and personal property within that portion of
the Tenth (Laurel) Election District that is not within the corporate
limits of the Town of Laurel.
(b) The proceeds of the said tax collected each year after this
section becomes effective shall be disbursed by the appropriate
officer of Prince George's County to The Laurel Rescue Squad, Inc.,
for the exclusive use of said rescue squad, in return for said rescue
squad's providing complete rescue service within the Tenth Election
District of Prince George's County.
(c) The provisions of this section shall be effective notwithstanding
the provisions of Section 650 of this sub-title, which said section so
far as the Tenth Election District is concerned shall remain in full
force and effect.
Section 2. And be it further enacted, That before any tax shall
be levied under the provisions of this Act, the question of such levy
shall first be submitted to the legally qualified voters who reside in
said portion of the Tenth (Laurel) Election District that is not
within the corporate limits of the Town of Laurel at a special election
to be held not later than November 30, 1959, on a date to be set in
the discretion of the County Commissioners, the cost of said election
to be borne by the County Commissioners. There shall be printed
on the ballots to be used at said election the title of this Act and
underneath said title, on separate lines, a square or box to the right
of and opposite the words "For Rescue Squad Tax", and a cor-
responding square or box to the right of and opposite the words
"Against Rescue Squad Tax", so that the voters shall be able to
designate by a cross-mark in the proper square or box his or her
decision for or against said tax. If a majority of the votes cast in
said portion of the Tenth (Laurel) Election District shall be "For
Rescue Squad Tax", then said tax shall be levied and paid over in
accordance with the provisions of this Act, but if a majority of
the votes cast therein shall be "Against Rescue Squad Tax", then
this Act shall be of no effect and shall be null and void.
