572                                Laws of Maryland                        [Ch. 441

The term "green pelt" shall mean a pelt which is not dried or
cured or tanned.

The word "furs" or "pelts" shall mean and include the raw, green
and cured skins, hides, furs or pelts from all wild quadrupeds.

The term "open season" shall mean the time, with the exception
of Sunday, during which game and fur-bearing animals may be le-
gally taken or killed and shall include both the first and last day of
the season or period designated by this sub-title.

The term "closed season" shall mean the time during which game
or fur-bearing animals may not be legally taken or killed and in-
cludes all periods of time not included within the open season.

The term "hunt" shall mean to include: Hunt, pursue, catch, kill,
trap, shoot, or attempt to hunt, pursue, catch, kill, trap, or shoot.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That new Section 132 (n) be
and is hereby added to said Article and sub-title, to follow im-
mediately after Section 132 (m) thereof and to read as follows:

(n) Except for the English or European house sparrow, Euro-
pean starling, buzzard, and crow, and except as provided in Section
141 of this Article, it shall be unlawful for any person to hunt, shoot,
kill, trap, net, or destroy, or to possess in any manner within the
limits of this State, any wild bird or any part, nest, or egg thereof.
Nothing herein contained shall be deemed to make it unlawful for
the owner of land or his agent to shoot hawks or owls when said
landowner or his agent considers it necessary to kill these species
to protect from destruction his poultry or game on his property or
whenever any county considers it necessary to permit the killing of
these species. Nothing herein contained shall prohibit the control
of animals or birds which have become obnoxious in nature or habit
or that are doing damage to wild life, by the Department of Game
and Inland Fish or its employees, on any lands within this State.

Any person who violates any provision of this sub-section shall,
upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than seventy
dollars and costs of prosecution.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.
