CHAPTER 248
(House Bill 334)

AN ACT to add new Section 534A to Article 27 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Crimes and Punishments",
sub-title "Sabbath Breaking", to follow immediately after Section
534 thereof, concerning the operation of facilities for, the engaging
in or playing of certain sports or games in Queen Anne's County
on Sunday.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 534A be and it is hereby added to Article 27 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Crimes and
Punishments", sub-title "Sabbath Breaking", to follow immediately
after Section 534 thereof, to read as follows:

534A. Nothing contained in Sections 492 and 522 of this Article
shall be construed to prohibit or make unlawful within Queen Anne's
County on the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday, the
operation of facilities for, the engaging in or playing of baseball,
golf, tennis, bowling, tenpins, duckpins, croquet, basketball, lacrosse,
soccer, hockey, softball, swimming, boating, sailing, fishing, skating
or any other wholesome game or sport by any person or persons, or
the officiating at or assisting in the conduct of the playing of any
of said game or sports by any person or persons, or the officiating
at or assisting in the conduct of the playing of any of said games or
sports by any umpire, manager, groundskeeper, gate keeper, ticket
seller, pin boy, bat boy, or any other attendant. Except that no such
games or sports shall be played or engaged in within one hundred
(100) yards of any permanent church edifice where and when re-
ligious services are being held.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.

                CHAPTER 249

(House Bill 336)

AN ACT to add 4 new sections to the Code of Public Local Laws of
Allegany County (1955 Edition), being Article 1 of the Code of
Public Local Laws of Maryland, title "Allegany County", sub-
title "Fire Companies", said new sections to be known as Sections
148A to 148D, inclusive, to follow immediately after Section 148
of said Article and to be under the new sub-heading "LaVale Fire
Area", relating to the creation of the "LaVale Fire Area" and to
the levy of a special fire tax in parts of Election Districts Nos. 29,
5 and 6 in Allegany County, comprising said "LaVale Fire Area",
and providing for a referendum thereon.

Explanation: Italics indicate new matter added to existing law.

[Brackets] indicate matter stricken from existing law.
CAPITALS indicate amendments to bill.
Strike out indicates matter stricken out of bill.
