238                              Laws of Maryland                       [Ch. 185

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 226 to 228, inclusive, AND 227 of Article 41 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Governor—
Executive and Administrative Departments", sub-title "Department
of Information", be and they are hereby repealed.

2. And be it further enacted, That new Sections 257 to 266, in-
clusive, be and they are hereby added to said Article, said new sec-
tions to follow immediately after Section 256 thereof, and to be under
the new sub-title "Department of Economic Development", and all to
read as follows:

Department of Economic Development

257.    The Department of Economic Development is hereby created
for the general purpose of advancing the economic welfare of the
people through programs and activities to develop in a proper man-
ner the State's natural resources and
industrial ECONOMIC oppor-
tunities pertaining to commerce, agriculture, mining, forestry, trans-
portation,
TRAVEL, TOURISM, and recreation, and to promote and
encourage the location of new industries and businesses in the State
of Maryland and other matters intended to foster and develop gainful
employment and the pursuit of happiness of all who now are or who
may hereafter be residents of this State.

258.    To carry out fully and effectively all the provisions of this
sub-title, the powers and duties of the Department of Economic
Development shall vest in and be exercised by a State Commission of
economic development, to consist of
seven TWELVE members who
shall be appointed by the Governor, by and with the advice and con-
sent of the Senate.

The members shall represent a cross section of the economic and
georgraphic
GEOGRAPHIC composition of the State, and shall be
selected because of their known experience and interest in the devel-
opment of natural resources and industrial
AND TOURIST oppor-
tunities from the following areas of the State:

2. One member from the Eastern Shore;

3. One member from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties;

4. One member from Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washing-

ton Counties; and

5. One member from Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.

TWO MEMBERS FROM THE COUNTIES COMPRISING THE
EASTERN SHORE; TWO MEMBERS FROM THE COUNTIES
COMPRISING SOUTHERN MARYLAND; TWO MEMBERS
FROM THE COUNTIES COMPRISING CENTRAL MARYLAND;
TWO MEMBERS FROM THE COUNTIES COMPRISING WEST-
ERN MARYLAND; TWO MEMBERS FROM BALTIMORE CITY;
AND TWO MEMBERS APPOINTED FROM THE STATE AT
LARGE.

1. Three members from Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Balti-
more, Carroll, Harford and Howard Counties, at least one of whom

shall represent Baltimore City, and at least one of whom shall not

represent Baltimore City;
