terests of the classified service, in the judgment of the Commis-
sioner. Unclassified employees shall have the same right as classified
employees to take promotional examinations for positions in the
and shall also have the right to be temporarily appointed to such
classified service, providing they have the necessary qualifications;
positions, when qualified, under the provisions of Section 24 (a) of
this Article.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted. That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sections 146 and
147 of the Allegany County Code (1955 Edition, being Article 1 of
the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Allegany
County", sub-title "Fire Companies", relating to annual payments
by Allegany County to the Old Town Volunteer Fire Department,
Inc., and relating generally to THE CHAPEL HILL HOSE COM-
PANY AND OTHER fire companies in Allegany County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 146 and 147 of the Allegany County Code (1955 Edi-
tion, being Article 1 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland),
title "Allegany County", sub-title "Fire Companies", be and the same
are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as
follows:
146. The County Commissioners of Allegany County are hereby
authorized, empowered and directed to pay the sum of [$22,025]
$22,968.40 $22,813.40 annually to the several volunteer fire companies
so long as said fire companies remain incorporated bodies, for their
benefit, said sum of money to be used by the respective fire companies
for the purchase, repair or maintenance of fire fighting equipment or
for the repair, maintenance or upkeep of buildings used by the
respective fire companies.
147. Said payment shall be made on the first day of October in
each and every year by the County Commissioners of Allegany
County, and it shall be distributed as follows: To the Frostburg Fire
Department, the sum of $1,772.40; to the Potomac Fire Department
of Westernport, the sum of $1,520.80; to the Good Will Fire Depart-
ment of Lonaconing, the sum of $1,494.40; to the LaVale Fire De-
partment, the sum of $1,227.50; to the Midland Fire Company, the
Mt. Savage Fire Department, the Barton Hose Company, the Luke
Fire Department and the Community Volunteer Fire Company of
