1434                             Joint Resolutions

Resolved, That the United States Coast Guard be requested to take
appropriate steps in order to include questions pertaining to re-
strictions on pollution and the penalties for their violation, in its
examinations for various mariners' licenses; and, be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be sent to the State
agencies mentioned herein and to the United States Coast Guard.

(House Joint Resolution 1)

Joint Resolution expressing to the new State of Alaska the welcome
of the people of the State of Maryland.

The people of the State of Maryland speaking through their Gen-
eral Assembly send cordial greetings and a hearty welcome to their
fellow citizens in the 49th State, Alaska.

Since its purchase was originally dubbed as "Seward's Folly" in
1867, the territory of Alaska has made tremendous progress. Now,
as it takes a place among the Union of American States, Alaska has
come into the literal promise of its name as "The Great Country."

Maryland as one of the thirteen original colonies salutes the
achievements and the prospects of Alaska, our newest sister state;
now therefore be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the warmest
greetings of this State and of its citizens be extended to the State
and citizens of Alaska on the occasion of its becoming a State; and
be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State of Maryland be directed
to send a copy of this Resolution under the Great Seal of the State
of Maryland to the Honorable William A. Egan, Governor of the
State of Alaska, at Juneau, Alaska.

Approved February 16, 1959.

(Senate Joint Resolution 6)

Senate Joint Resolution requesting the State Roads Commission to
take all possible steps to have included in the Inter-State Highway
