Commissioners of Wicomico County in monthly installments for every
year he or she may serve as such deputy, or pro rata for a part
thereof.

If it shall become necessary to employ other Clerk or Clerks in
said office, the Treasurer, by and with the consent of the County
Commissioners, may employ same at a salary or salaries to be fixed
by said Commissioners. The Treasurer shall be responsible for the
official conduct of such Clerk or Clerks so appointed by him.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

CHAPTER 73
(House Bill 231)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 38. (v)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1956 Cumulative
Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties",
relating generally to the salaries and expenses of the Sheriff of
Wicomico County, his deputies and assistants and relating to the
administration of said office.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38. (v) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1956 Cumulative Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compen-
sation and Duties", be, and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted with
amendments to read as follows:

38. (v) The Sheriff of Wicomico County shall receive an annual
salary of [$3600.00] Forty-five Hundred Dollars ($4500.00) to be
paid to him in equal monthly installments. He shall appoint a chief
deputy who shall receive an annual salary [of not more than Twenty-
eight Hundred Dollars ($2800.00)] of not more than Thirty-five
Hundred Dollars ($3500.00),
payable in equal monthly installments.
He shall serve during the tenure of office of the sheriff subject to
removal by the sheriff. The sheriff may appoint such additional
deputies as he and the County Commissioners of Wicomico County
shall deem necessary, which additional deputies shall receive such
compensation as he and said County Commissioners of Wicomico
County shall determine. In addition thereto the sheriff of Wicomico
County shall be allowed such additional sums as may be necessary to
defray all expenses of his office, including necessary automobile mile-
age allowance at the rate of not less than six cents (6¢) per mile for
automobiles used by him and his deputies in the discharge of their
official duties, actual carfare or other transportation expense neces-
sary in the discharge of said duties, necessary telephone and telegraph
