Theodore R. McKeldin, Governor                    783

City (1949 Edition), being Article 4 of the Code of Public Local
Laws of Maryland, as. amended by Chapter 196 of the Acts of 1953,
title "Baltimore City", sub-title "Miscellaneous Local Laws", sub-
heading "People's Court", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:

436. [The Board of Estimates is hereby authorized and em-
powered to fix the salaries of Judges of the People's Court, in
amounts not less than those existing as of June 1, 1953.] The Mayor
and City Council of Baltimore City shall pay to the Chief Judge of
the People's Court of Baltimore City a salary of $15,500 per
annum, payable monthly, and to each of the Associate Judges of the
People's Court of Baltimore City, a salary of $15,000 per annum,
payable monthly.
Each of said Judges shall devote to his duties a
regular session on every day except Saturdays, Sundays and legal
holidays and such other sessions at such times as the Chief Judge
deems necessary or advisable, during such eleven months in each year
as the Chief Judge shall assign. No Judge of the People's Court
shall engage in the practice of law while holding the position of
Judge. The Chief Judge shall make such assignments in such man-
ner as to provide regular sessions for the transaction of business,
and such other sessions as he shall prescribe, throughout the entire
year. The Chief Judge of said Court may direct that the Chief
Constable's office shall be closed on Saturdays, so that the Clerk's
office may be closed on Saturdays. All such sessions shall be held
at such place as the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City shall
provide.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
January 1, 1958.

(Senate Bill 382)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 4 of Ar-
ticle 38 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title
"Fines and Forfeitures", clarifying the provision for confinement
for non-payment of fines.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 4 of Article 38 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition), title "Fines and Forfeitures", be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

4. Any person who shall or may hereafter be committed to jail
on any charge, including contempt of court, by the judgment of any
court or by any Justice of the Peace of this State, for non-payment
