Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38(j) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1951 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

38. (j) The Sheriff of Frederick County shall receive an an-
nual salary of [$4,000] $5,400, in addition to lodging furnished him
and his family and shall be allowed $300 for annual depreciation of
his automobile. He shall appoint four deputies SUCH DEPUTIES
AS MAY BE NECESSARY who shall each receive not less than
$2,400 per year, each of Whom shall be allowed $300 for the annual
depreciation of their automobiles, and as many jail wardens as may
be necessary, not to exceed three (8), at an annual salary of not less
than $1,320 each. The Sheriff may appoint such additional special
deputies as he may deem necessary, with the approval of the County
Commissioners, as to number and compensation.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing in this Act shall
be construed as affecting the compensation of the sheriff of Frede-
rick County who is in office on the effective date of this Act, for the
duration of the term in which he then is serving. The increase in
compensation shall be effective as of the beginning of the term of
office of the sheriff of Frederick County who is elected to that posi-
tion in the month of November, 1958.

SEC. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

(Senate Bill 464)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 38 (i) of
Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland ('1951 Edition),
title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and Duties", relating to
the salary of the Sheriff of Dorchester County and to his deputies,
duties and his office.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38(i) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1951 Edition), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amend-
ments, to read as follows:

38. (i) The Sheriff of Dorchester County shall receive an annual
salary of [$2,400 and $600 per year for expenses and an additional
$600 for maintenance of automobile for the use of the sheriff and
