sub-title "Administration—Registration—Titling", providing for
a new motor vehicle operator's registration law providing for the
termination of all present licenses and for their renewal, requiring
a preliminary renewal and replacement of all motor vehicle oper-
ator's licenses, to be followed by a three year renewal and replace-
ment, and relating generally to the fees and procedures for licens-
ing of motor vehicle operators in this State and repealing certain
inconsistent language in the laws relating thereto. THE TERMI-
NATION OF ALL PRESENT MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATORS'
LICENSES AND THEIR RENEWAL, RELATING GENERALLY
TO THE FEES AND PROCEDURES FOR THE LICENSING
OF MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATORS IN THIS STATE AND
REPEALING CERTAIN INCONSISTENT LANGUAGE IN
THE LAWS RELATING THERETO.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sections 85, 89 (a), 89 (b), 91 (a) and 91 (d) of Article 66½
of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition), title "Motor
Vehicles", sub-title "Administration—Registration—Titling", be and
they are hereby repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read
as follows:
85. (Operators and Chauffeurs Must Be Licensed) (a) No person
except those hereinafter expressly exempted shall drive any motor
vehicle upon a highway in this State unless such person has a valid
license as an operator or chauffeur under the provisions of this
Article. No person shall operate a motor vehicle as a chauffeur un-
less he holds a valid chauffeur's license.
(b) Any person holding a valid chauffeur's license hereunder need
not procure an operator's license.
[Violation of this section shall be deemed to be a misdemeanor
and upon conviction shall be punishable by a fine of Five ($5.00)
Dollars to One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars, or by imprisonment not
to exceed sixty (60) days or by both such fine and imprisonment.]
(c) All licenses to operate vehicles upon the highways of this
State, except chauffeur's licenses, issued prior to the time this sec-
tion becomes effective shall expire as provided under this section.,
AS FOLLOWS: Upon renewal as provided herein all licenses issued
under the provisions of this section shall automatically expire three
(3) years after the date of their issuance and upon renewal thereof,
every three (3) years thereafter.
(1) A license issued to a person whose last or surname begins
with the letters A, B, or C shall expire June 30, 1958;
(2) A license issued to a person whose last or surname begins
with the letters D, E, F or G shall expire December 31, 1958;
(3) A license issued to a person whose last or surname begins
with the letters H, I, J or K shall expire June 30, 1959;
(4) A license issued to a person whose last or surname begins
with the letters L, M, N or O shall expire December 31, 1959;
(5) A license issued to a person whose last or surname begins
with the letters P, Q, R or S shall expire June 30, 1960;
