Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That sub-section (j) of Section 40 of Article 10 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1956 Supplement), title "Attorneys at Law and
Attorneys in Fact", sub-title "State's Attorney", be and it is hereby
repealed and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

(j) The State's Attorney of Montgomery County shall receive an
annual salary of [$7,500,003 $10,000.00. The State's Attorney is
hereby authorized and empowered to appoint a Deputy State's At-
torney who shall receive an annual salary of not less than [$5,000.00]
$6,000.00 and [two] three assistant State's Attorneys who shall
each receive an annual salary of not less than [$3,600.00] $4,500.00.
The County Council may increase the compensation of the deputy
and [two] three assistant State's Attorneys in its discretion. The
State's Attorney and the deputy State's Attorney, or either of them,
shall present cases to the grand jury of Montgomery County, and
perform such other acts and duties in relation to said grand jury
as are necessary and proper. The salaries of the State's Attorney,
the deputy and assistant State's Attorneys shall include such services
as any of them performed before or on behalf of the judges of the
Circuit Court, justices of the peace or [trial magistrates] judges of
the People's Court of said county in preliminary hearings or trials
in criminal cases.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That nothing herein shall
be construed to change or affect the salary of the State's Attorney
for Montgomery County in office at the time this Act becomes ef-
fective. The increased salary herein provided for the said State's
Attorney for Montgomery County shall begin as of the start of the
term of office of the State's Attorney elected in Montgomery County
in the month of November, 1958.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1957.

(Senate Bill 296)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 3 (a) of
Article 25 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1951 Edition and
1956 Supplement), title "County Commissioners", sub-title
"General Provisions", excluding Queen Anne's County from those
counties in which the express powers granted in said section shall
be applicable.
