except in enclosures, or to suffer any swine to go and remain at
large therein, and if any swine, shall be found going and remaining
at large within said town, it shall and may be lawful for any per-
son or persons to impound the same, and if impounded, such per-
sons shall immediately give notice, by advertisements set up in the
most public places in said town, describing the swine so impounded,
and if the owner or owners shall not, within five days thereafter,
prove his or her property therein, and make compensation for the
injury, if any, which may have been sustained by any inhabitant of
said town, to be ascertained by any two disinterested persons, in-
habitants as aforesaid, and shall not pay for every such swine the
sum of twenty-five, cents for every day it shall have been so im-
pounded, it may be lawful for the person or persons so impounding
as aforesaid, to sell the same for his or her benefit.
2. And be it enacted, That if any person or persons shall be sued
and impleaded for selling any such swine as aforesaid, the defen-
dant or defendants may plead the general issue, and give this act
and the special matter in evidence.

CHAPTER 212.
An act relating to the Washington Monument.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the Washington Monument Lottery in the city of Baltimore, be and
the same is hereby exempted from the delay in the time of drawing,
imposed by the act to regulate lotteries within this state.

CHAPTER 213.
An act to pay the Civil List, and other expenses of Civil
Government.
Whereas, those who dedicate their time, abilities and labour,
to the public, ought to receive a reasonable, compensation for their
services;
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the following officers of the civil government, for the time being,
shall bo entitled to receive at the rate of the following salaries, in
current money, for the ensuing year, to wit: The treasurer of the
western shore, two thousand dollars; the treasurer of the eastern
shore, four hundred and fifty dollars; the auditor, five hundred dol-
lars; the clerk of the council, one thousand dollars; the clerk of the
senate, one hundred and fifty dollars; the clerk of the house of de-
legates, three hundred dollars; the printer to the state, fourteen hun-
dred dollars; the messenger to the council, two hundred and fifty
dollars.
2. And be it enacted, That all monies which shall remain in the
treasury after discharging the journal of accounts, and all unap-
propriated money which may come into the treasury, be first appli-
ed to the payment of the civil list for the ensuing year.

CHAPTER 214.
An act for the payment of the Journal of Accounts.
Whereas it appears by the journal of accounts of this session
that there is due from this state the sum of thirty-seven thousand,
four hundred and thirteen dollars, and fifty-eight and an half cents.
