soever, by the gift, bargain, sale or devise, of any person, or per-
sons, bodies politic or corporate, capable to make the same, and
the same to grant, devise, alien or dispose of, in such manner as
they may judge most conducive to the benevolent and charitable
use of the said association; Provided always, that the said corpo-

ration or hotly politic shall not at any time hold or possess proper-
ty, real, personal or mixed, exceeding in animal value the sum of
five thousand dollars.
2. And be it enacted, That the Most Reverend Archbishop Am-
brose Marechal, the Reverend Enoch Fenwick, John Hillen, Thomas

C. Jenkins, John Parsons, Patrick Tiernan, David Williamson, juni-
or, and John Sinnott, be and are hereby declared managers and direc-
tors of the said corporation, and that they shall have power and au-
thority to elect a president and vice-president out of the board of di-
rectors aforesaid, and when a vacancy shall happen therein by death
or resignation, they shall have power and authority to fill up the same
by election, by a majority of the votes of the said directors.
3. And be it enacted, That the president, vice-president and di-
rectors, of the said school, and their successors, or a majority of
them, shall and may ordain, establish, and put in execution, such
by-laws, ordinances and regulations, as to them shall seem condu-
cive to the interests of the said institution, and necessary to the good
government and orderly management thereof, the same not being
contrary to the laws of this state, or of the United States, and ge-
nerally to do and execute all such acts, matters and things, and in
such manner and form as to them shall seem proper, in order more
effectually to carry into effect the purposes of this act; Provided al-
ways, that a majority of the directors in being shall be necessary
to form a quorum for the transaction of business.
4. And be it enacted, That the president, vice-president and direc-
tors aforesaid, and their successors, by the name aforesaid, shall be
able and capable in law to sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded,
answer and be answered unto, defend and be defended, in all and any
court or courts of justice whatsoever, and also to make and use a
common seal, and the same to break, alter and renew, at pleasure.

CHAPTER 187.

An act for the benefit of a Religious Society in Frederick
County called The United Brethren.
Whereas, it is represented to this general assembly, by the pe-
tition of certain members of a religious society called The United
Brethren, in Frederick county, that certain lands lying in said
county called The Gift, containing ten acres more or less; part of a
tract of land called Content, containing thirty acres more or less;
a part of a tract of land called Smith's Hap, containing half an
acre and twenty perches; and part of a tract of land called Con-
tent, containing three-fourths of an acre, were in the years seven-
teen hundred and fifty-eight, seventeen hundred and eighty-two,
and seventeen hundred and eighty-eight, conveyed to certain trus-
tees for the use and benefit of said society, and that doubts are en-
tertained as to the title derived under said deeds; and the said pe-
titioners having petitioned that the title of said society to said
lands may be confirmed and vested for their use in certain trus-
tees, Therefore,
