alms and work-house in Caroline county, shall well and truly dis-
charge his duly in the said station, during his continuance therein,
according to the directions of the act of assembly, entitled, An
act for the relief of the poor of Caroline county, then the above
obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue
in law."
8. And be it enacted, That the said trustees, or a majority of
them, shall meet at the alms and work-house in the said county,
four times in the year, to wit: on the first Monday of April and
July, and on the second Monday of October and January, and
oftener if necessary, to make and ordain all such orders, rules
and by-laws, as they shall think necessary for the better govern-
ment and support of such alms and work-house, and also for the
maintenance, support and employment, of all such poor persons as
shall be taken under their care, and of all vagrants, beggars, vaga-
bonds, and other offenders, that shall be committed thereto by vir-
tue of this act, all which ordinances, rules and by-laws, shall be
from time to time inviolably observed, by all persons concerned,
according to the tenor and effect thereof.
9. And be it enacted, That the said trustees, or a majority of
them, shall and they are hereby directed and empowered, to re-
move such overseer, and all other officers to be by them appointed
in pursuance of this act, at their discretion, and to choose others
in their place.
10. And be it enacted, That the said overseer shall keep a fair
and regular list of all poor, and of all beggars, vagrants, vagabonds,
and other offenders, who shall be placed in, or committed to the
said alms and work-house, and shall also, upon oath or affirmation,
deliver a fair and regular account, in writing, of all materials and
other things coming into his hands as overseer aforesaid, and of all
expenses and charges attending their maintenance and support, and
of all monies received by him from the sale of the produce of their
labour, and otherwise as overseer aforesaid, and shall lay the said
lists, statements and accounts, before the said trustees, or a majo-
rity of them, at their meetings at the times by this act direct-
ed, or oftener if by them required.
11. And be it enacted, That the overseer may compel and oblige
any of the said poor, beggars, vagrants, vagabonds, and other
offenders, in the said alms and work-house, if of sufficient ability,
to work and labour, and the produce of their labour he is hereby
directed and empowered to sell, and apply the money arising from
such sale towards their maintenance and support.
12. And be it enacted, That upon complaint made that any per-
son, from his or her disorderly conduct, gives disturbance to his or
her neighbours, and is likely to become chargeable to said county,
it shall and may be lawful for any justice of the peace of said coun-
ty, if upon hearing the 'party he shall judge the complaint to be
well founded, to commit such disorderly person residing within
said county to the said work-house, for any time not exceeding
three months, unless he or she shall find security at the discretion
of the aforesaid justice of the peace, in any sum not exceeding
thirty dollars, for his or her good behaviour for six months; and
also upon complaint and due proof made by the overseer of said
alms and wort-house, to any one of the trustees, that any one in
