land, That it shall be lawful for the levy court of Prince Geor-
ge's county to assess and levy on the assessable property of
said county such sum as to them shall appear adequate to com-
pensate Philip Spalding for all loss sustained by the building
in said county kept as a jail by the sheriff thereof being con-
sumed by fire by the prisoners confined therein, and that the
sum so assessed shall be collected in the same manner as other
levies, and paid to the said Philip Spalding.

CHAPTER 107.
An act to provide for the erection of a new Court House in
Hagers Town Washington County.
Sec 1. BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That John Blackford, Samuel Ringgold, William
Gabby, John Bowles and Thomas C Brent be, and they are
hereby unpointed commissioners to select and purchase such lot
or lots of ground within the limits of Hagers Town or the ad-
ditions to said town, as in their judgment or a majority of them
shall consider the most eligible and proper site for a new court
house for the county aforesaid,
2. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners herein
before named or a majority of them be, and they are hereby au-
thorised and empowered to contract for and superintend the
building of a new court house with suitable apartments for the
court and juries, clerk's, sheriffs and register's offices, and fire
proof places of deposit for the public records on the site as
above by them to be selected and purchased, upon such terms
and in such manner as to them shall seem most advantageous
to the community.
8. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the commissioners
herein before named, or a majority of them, shall have power
to appoint some capable person to superintend and direct the
erection of the building aforesaid, under the order of the com-
missioners, and that they be and they are hereby empowered
to allow to such person so employed such compensation as they
or a majority of them may deem adequate to his services,
4. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the levy court of
Washington county be, and they are hereby authorised and re-
quired to assess and levy on the assessable properly of said
county, in five successive equal annual instalments, a sum not
exceeding; thirty thousand dollars if necessary, the first instal-
ment to be assessed by the said court at the second annual ses-
sion which after the passage of this act they shall hold for the
purpose of laying the county levy, and to be collected by the
sheriff of said county.
. 5 AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of
the levy court to take bond from said sheriff with sufficient se-
curity, in the name of the State of Maryland, for the collection
and payment to the commissioners aforesaid, or to their assign-
ees of the said sum of money at the time at which the public
levy of Washington county is by law directed to be collected
and paid; and that the sheriff shall be allowed the same as is al-
lowed by law for collecting the county levy; and in case the
said bond shall be forfeited, it shall and may be lawful for the
levy court of said county, and they are hereby directed and re-
quired to order suit or suits to be instituted against the said
sheriff and his securities or either of them for the purpose of
