Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
on or before the first day of May next, it shall be the duty of the
several officers mentioned in the act, entitled, "An Act to tax cer-
tain offices," on or before the first of May, in the year of our
Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty-six; and on or be-
fore the first day of May in each and every year thereafter, to make
returns of the accounts by them respectively kept for fees received,
agreeably to the directions of the above recited act, to the treasur-
er of the shore on which such officer may reside, verified and at-
tested in the. manner required by the said act; and it shall be the
duty of each of the said officers, within sixty days after the first
day of May in each and every year, to pay to such treasurer the
sum of money wherewith he may be chargeable for fees accruing
due to him in any year, and by him received, over and above the
sum of fifteen hundred dollars.
2. And be it enacted, That the said officers in their accounts to
be retained as aforesaid, shall specify therein, the year in which
the fees received by them accrued, and became payable; and when-
ever the amount of money stated in the said accounts to have been
received for fees accruing due in any one year, shall exceed the
sum of fifteen hundred dollars; then the treasurer shall charge
such officer the tax directed by the above recited act.
3. And be it enacted, That if it shall appear by the returns to be
made by the said officers on or before the first day of May next,
in pursuance of the above recited act, that any of the said officers
hath paid a tax, when the whole amount of fees by him received,
shall not have exceeded fifteen hundred dollars, for the year ending
on that day; then and in such case the treasurer is hereby directed
to repay to such officer the tax by him so paid, with interest there-
on, from the time of such payment.
4. And be it enacted, That so much of the act, entitled, "An
Act to tax certain offices," as is inconsistent with the provisions of
this act, be, and the same hereby is repealed.

CHAPTER 191.
An act to pay the civil list and other expenses of civil government.
Whereas, those who dedicate their time, abilities and labor to
the public, ought to receive a reasonable compensation for their
services; Therefore,
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the following officers of the civil government, for the time being,
shall be entitled to receive at the rate of the following salaries in
current money, for the ensuing year, to wit: the treasurer of the
Western Shore, two thousand dollars; the treasurer of the Eas-
tern Shore, four hundred and fifty dollars; the auditor seven hun-
dred dollars; the examiner general six hundred dollars, including
his legal fees of office; the clerk of the council, fifteen hundred
dollars, in lieu of all remuneration or compensation for his servi-
ces; the clerk of the senate, one hundred and fifty dollars; the clerk
of the house of delegates, three hundred dollars; the messenger
to the council, three hundred and fifty dollars.
2. And be it enacted, That all monies which shall remain in the
treasury, after discharging the journal of accounts and all unap-
