SAMUEL STEVENS, Jr. ESQUIRE, GOVERNOR.

Dec. Ses. 1822

by the said justice, in the penalty of twenty dollars, for his or her per-
sonal appearance at the next county court to be holden for the same
county, to answer the charge so made against him or her; and if the
person so charged shall neglect or refuse to enter into such recogni-
zance, it shall be the duty of said justice of the peace to commit him
or her to the public jail of said county, there to remain until such re-
cognizance shall be given, or until such offender shall be discharg-
ed from prison by due course of law: Provided, nevertheless, that if
the said offender, upon being brought before a justice of the peace as
aforesaid, shall pay to the said justice one half of the penalty impos-
ed by this law for the offence charged (to be paid over by the said
justice to the levy court of the county wherein the offence may have
been committed, for the use of the county) it shall then be the duty
of the said justice to release and discharge such offender, and no
other proceedings shall elsewhere be had against said offender for
that offence.

Failure of
duty.

4. And be it enacted, That if any justice of the peace, to whom
any sum may be paid by virtue of any of the provisions of this act
shall neglect or refuse to pay over the said sum to the levy court of
said county, such justice shall forfeit a sum double in amount to the
sum received, to be recovered by indictment in the county court of
said county.

Repeal.

5. And be it enacted, That such parts of any act of assembly which
are repugnant to, or inconsistent with the provisions of this act, be,
and the same are hereby repealed, so far as respects Baltimore
county.

CHAPTER 77.

A further supplement to an act to erect a bridge over the Narrows of
Kent Island, in Queen Ann's county; passed December session eigh-
teen hundred and nineteen.

Compensa-
tion.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the levy court of Queen Ann's county, be, and they are hereby
authorised and required to levy, at their next levy, upon the assess-
able property of the said county, the sum of fifty-four dollars, for the
use of James Hopkins, of said county, as a full compensation for
labor and services rendered by him on the old wharves at Kent
Island Narrows, exclusive of his services as commissioner and of his
contract for building the bridge or causeway.

Per diem.

2. And be it enacted, That the said levy court shall also levy such
a per diem compensation for the services heretofore rendered by the
commissioners for building the said bridge, to each commissioner,
as they in their judgment shall think sufficient and proper.

CHAPTER 78.

An additional supplement to an act, entitled, "An act to incorporate a
company for erecting a bridge over Nanticoke River, at or near
Vienna, in Dorchester county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS the Nanticoke Bridge Company sustains much incon-
venience from the twelfth section of the original act, to which this
is a supplement, relating to the time of making the dividends, &c.
therefore,

Change.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That, instead
of the first Monday in June and January, as required by the twelfth
section of the above act, tire president and directors of said Nanticoke
Bridge Company be authorised and directed to make and declare
