mitted to go at large in pursuance of this act, such sheriff or gaoler
may plead the general issue, and give this act and the special matter
in evidence; and unless the plaintiff or plaintiffs on the trial of such
issue shall prove the payment or a tender made to the said sheriff
or gaoler, of the amount of compensation due to the sheriff in vir-
tue of this act, and of the act to which this is a supplement, for
keeping and supporting such prisoner at the time of discharging or
permitting him to go at large, the said plaintiff or plaintiffs in such
action shall not be entitled to recover.

CHAPTER 222.

An act for the benefit of certain persons who naturalized under the
laws of this state.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
all persons who have heretofore taken the oath prescribed by the
act, entitled, An act for naturalization, passed at July session, seven-
teen hundred and seventy-nine, and the several supplementary acts
thereto, and conformed in every other respect with the requisites re-
quired by the said acts, shall be deemed, construed and taken to have
been, and they hereby are declared to have been, and to be respec-
tively entitled to all and singular the immunities, privileges, rights
and advantages of natural born citizens, so far as to enable such per-
sons to acquire right, title and interest in, and to hold, possess and
enjoy lands, tenements and real estate, within this state, and to trans-
mit and transfer the same in the same manner as natural born citi-
zens of this state; and all property, real, personal and mixed, ac-
quired and transferred by, from, through, or under the said persons,
or any of them, or their, or any of their descendants, shall be held,
possessed, enjoyed or transferred, in the like manner as if the said
persons had respectively been and were, as, the several times of ac-
quiring such property, natural born citizens of this state; and all and
every person or persons whatsoever, being citizens of this or some
one of the United States, claiming any real estate by, from or under
the said persons first herein before described, or their or any of their
descendants, by gift, grant, purchase, descent or otherwise,. shall hold,
possess and enjoy the same, in like manner as if the said persons had
respectively been and were, at the several times of acquiring and
transferring such real estate, natural born citizens of this state, Pro-

with, or affect the rights of any person or persons, acquired before
the passage of this act.

CHAPTER 223.

An act for the payment of the journal of accounts.
WHEREAS it appears by the journal of accounts of this session,
that there is due from this state the sum of forty two thousand two
hundred and ten dollars and thirty-three cents.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the trea-
surer of the Western Shore, be, and he is hereby authorised and re-
quired to pay the several persons, their executors, administrators, as-
signs or orders, or to such of them as shall offer to receive the same,
the several sums of current money allowed to them respectively, as
they appear to be settled and ascertained by the said journal of ac-
counts, out of any money now in the treasury, or that shall come into
the treasury, subject to the appropriation of the General Assembly.
