order, as a compensation for his services during the past year; also
such further sum as may be necessary for the payment of such per-
son or persons as may have bid off the whole or any district of said

Neglect of du-
ty, &c.

i 27. And be it enacted, That whenever any person or per-
sons shall be convicted of neglect of duty under this act, or shall die,
it shall be lawful for the justices of the levy court, in their discre-
tion, to rescind the contract made with such person or persons, and
to let out the particular division of road bid off by such person or
persons, to any person or persons, according to the provisions afore-
said.

Persons labor-
ing—compen-
sation.

28. And be it enacted, That if the levy court of the said
county shall decide to keep the roads in repair by the labor of the
persons residing upon the different road districts, and required to
work upon the roads under the provisions of this act, instead of
selling said roads to the lowest bidder, it shall be, and is hereby
made the duty of said court, to levy and allow for each district hav-
ing upon it a number of laboring hands less than seven, the sum of
twenty dollars, to be allowed on the levy list in the same manner
that other allowances are directed under this act, and apportioned
among the hands according to the portion of work done by each;
and it is hereby made the duty of the supervisors of the districts
aforesaid, to return to the levy court, under oath, a list of the persons
upon his district subject to labor upon the public roads, and of the
number of days which each hand has worked.

Special con-
tracts for
bridges, &c.

29. And be it enacted, That nothing in this act contained
shall prevent the levy court of said county from making a special
contract for making a new bridge in said county, or repairing any
bridge, nor shall the provisions of this act be construed to interfere
with the duties imposed by law upon the owner of a water mill.

Levies—when
to be made.

i 30. And be it enacted, That these levies so ordered and di-
rected, shall be made at the termination of the year during which
the several expenses are incurred.

Repeal.

31. And be it enacted, That all acts of assembly, or any part
or parts thereof, inconsistent with the provisions of this act, be, and
the same are hereby repealed; Provided, That nothing herein con-
tained shall be construed to affect or invalidate any contracts made
before the passage of this act, or any proceedings had or commenced
in pursuance of the powers granted by any of the sections hereby
repealed.

CHAPTER 111.

A further supplement to an act entitled, An act for making certain
roads in Baltimore and Harford counties.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted By the General Assembly of Maryland,
That if any person or persons who shall pass over the bridge erec-
ted by the Baltimore and Harford Turnpike Company, across the
Great Gun-powder Falls, shall ride, lead or drive any horse, mule
or oxen, at any other gait than a walk, such person or persons shall
be subject to the payment of fifty cents for each and every horse,
mule or ox, so rode or driven; and if such person be a slave, his
