after the drawing of the said lottery or lotteries shall commence, as
will satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes drawn by them, and
defray the necessary expenses incurred in the management thereof.

Bond to be re-
corded.

3. And be it enacted, That the governor and council shall lodge
such bond in the clerk's office of Kent county, there to be recorded,
and upon such bond, or an office copy thereof, suit or suits may be
commenced and prosecuted against the obligors therein or any of
them, or their or any of their legal representatives for any breach or
non-compliance with the conditions of the same.

4. And be it enacted, That the said lottery or lotteries, shall
and may be drawn under the direction and superintendence of the
commissioners of lotteries, and that the purchaser or purchasers of
the said scheme or schemes, before he or they proceed to draw the
said lottery or lotteries, shall pay to the treasurer of the western
shore, the sum of one thousand dollars, to be applied towards the
payment of the salaries of the said commissioners of lotteries:

Proviso.

Provided, that if the said lottery commissioners shall not be con-
tinued at the time of the drawing of the said lottery or lotteries,
that then the sum of one thousand dollars above directed to be
paid, shall and may be retained by the purchaser or purchasers of
said scheme or schemes.

Preamble.

CHAPTER 225.

An act concerning the Shepherd's Town Bridge Company.
Whereas, The legislature of Virginia, at their last session,
did pass an act incorporating a company to erect a toll bridge
across the Potomac river, at or near Shepherd's town, and requir-
ing the assent of the legislature of this state to the provisions of the
said act; and it being necessary to make provision by law for the
abutment of the said bridge on the Maryland shore—Therefore.

State assents.

Sec. 1. Be it enacted By the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the assent of the legislature of this state, be and the same is hereby
declared to the erection of a toll bridge across the Patomac river,
at and opposite Shepherd's Town, pursuant to the provisions of an
act of the legislature of Virginia, passed the sixteenth day of Feb-
ruary eighteen hundred and twenty one.

2. And be it enacted, That the president and directors of the
said company or a majority of them, shall have power to contract
with the proprietor or proprietors of the land on the Maryland
shore, against which the said bridge shall be proposed to be abut-
ted, for the priviledge of said abutment; and if the said presi-
dent and directors should not be able to agree with said proprietor
or proprietors upon the price for said privilege of an abutment,
then the said president and directors shall apply to the court of
Washington county, Maryland, whose duty it shall be to appoint
nine disinterested and respectable citizens of Washington county-
aforesaid, who being first sworn, shall view the land so proposed for
said abutment, and fairly and impartially, to the best of their judg-
ment, fix upon and ascertain the sum which the said proprietor or
proprietors ought to have and receive for the privilege of said abut-
ment, taking all circumstances into consideration, and provided the
proprietor or proprietors of the property aforesaid, or the president
and directors of the bridge company aforesaid, should not be satis-
lied with the decision of the commissioners aforesaid, either party
