LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Any person
depriving ne-
gro of his free-
dom for a long-
er time than
sold for, to be
fined and im-
prisoned.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That if any person
purchasing a negro convicted under the provisions
of this act, shall sell the said negro for a longer
time than that for which he has purchased him,
or in any other manner continue to deprive him of
his freedom, when the term of service has expired
for which he was sold, he shall be fined a sum in
double the amount for which the said negro was
sold, and in default of payment shall be impris-
oned for a term of not less than thirty, nor more
than ninety days, or may be both fined and im-
prisoned in the discretion of the court.

In force.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from and after its passage.

AN ACT to authorise the Comptroller to settle
with William H. Jones, late collector of direct
taxes for Somerset county, in the manner there-
in stated.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That William H. Jones, late
collector of the balance of direct tax in Som-
erset county, for eighteen hundred and forty-
one, eighteen hundred and forty-two, eighteen
hundred and forty-three and eighteen hundred
and forty-four, not collected by the agent of
said county, is charged upon the books of the
Treasury Department with amounts of bal-
ances for these years, different from the amounts
placed in his hands and charged against him
by the County Commissioners of Somerset coun-
ty, for said years respectively; Therefore,

Comptroller
authorised to
settle.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the Comptroller, be and
he is hereby authorised and directed to settle
with the said William H. Jones, as collector of
direct tax for the years eighteen hundred and
