LAWS OF MARYLAND.

they shall also elect a secretary, who shall also be
a treasurer for the term of one year, that the said
secretary shall make and keep a record of all the
proceedings of said trustees, and of all other mat-
ters directed by them to he entered and recorded,
that the said trustees shall and may employ a
teacher or teachers, fix his or their salary or sala-
ries, and the terms of tuition, and regulate the
admission of pupils, in which they shall make no
distinction on the grounds of religion, and they
shall and may make and ordain all by-laws and
ordinances, necessary to carry out the purposes of
this act, and for the regulation and government
of the said school, and to promote education
thereat, not inconsistent with the Constitution and
laws of this State.

SEC. 7. And be it enacted, That said school
house may be used for religious worship, in such
manner and at such times as may be allowed and
directed by said trustees.

SEC. 8. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect from and after the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 240.

A SUPPLEMENT TO AN ACT entitled, an act
to incorporate a company to make a turnpike
road from Hagerstown in Washington county,
to the Pennsylvania line, passed December ses-
sion, eighteen hundred and forty-six, chapter
three hundred and thirty-three.

Rates of toll.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That from and after the passage
of this act, it shall be lawful for said Company,
to charge at toll-gate, two miles north-east of
Hagerstown, the following rates of toll: for every
score of sheep six cents, for every score of hogs
six cents, for every score of cattle twelve cents,
for every horse and his rider, or led horse four
cents, for every sulkey or chaise with one horse
eight cents, for every sulkey, chaise or coach,
