CHAPTER 211.
AN ACT for the relief of Robert Digges.
|
|
|
Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, it has been represented to this General
Assembly, by a large and respectable number
of the tax payers of Charles county, that in May
eighteen hundred and fifty-seven, Madison But-
ler, a negro slave of Robert Digges of said coun-
ty was arrested, charged with the murder of a
free negro named Bill Mason, and committed
upon that charge to the jail of said county, that
he continued in close confinement until his trial
on the tenth day of December when he was con-
victed of manslaughter and sentenced to the
Penitentiary; And whereas, the owner of said
slave was deprived for a long time of his labor
and the amount of his valuation will not be
payable until January eighteen hundred and
fifty-nine; Therefore,

Made valid.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That the Commissioners of the
tax of Charles county be and they are hereby au-
thorised and required to levy upon the assessable
property of said county the sum of two hundred
dollars for the use of the said Robert Digges.

|
In force.
|
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall
take effect immediately from and after its passage.

AN ACT to make valid a deed from Robert H.
Powell and Elizabeth Powell, his wife, to Ben-
jamin Bassett.
|
|
|
Made valid.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the deed of conveyance made
and executed on the eleventh day of February,
in the year eighteen hundred and forty-two, by
Robert H. Powell and Elizabeth Powell his wife,
