rated institutions and companies, be and the same is
hereby repealed.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the act of Assem-
bly passed at December session eighteen hundred
and forty-four, chapter two hundred and eighty, im-
posing stamp duties on promissory notes, bills of ex-
change, specialties and other instruments of writing
and the act of Assembly passed at December session
eighteen hundred and forty-five, chapter one hundred
and ninety-three, imposing stamp duties on mortga-
ges, bills of sale, and other instruments of writing,
and any subsequent act, re-enacting the same, be and
the same is hereby repealed.

Act repealed.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That all bills, notes, or
bonds that have been drawn previous to the repeal of
this act, and have not been stamped, shall be as good
and valid as though they had been stamped and all
debts that have been created, where the proper
vouchers are shown shall be as valid in law as though
the stamp act had never been passed.

Made valid.

SEC. 6. Be it enacted, That this act shall take ef-
fect from its passage.

CHAPTER 353.

To take effect.

AN ACT to raise additional revenue to pay the debts
of the State by increasing the rates of license to
ordinary keepers and traders.

10, 1856.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That on and after the first day of May next
it shall not be lawful for any person or persons, body
or bodies corporate, within this State, other than the
grower, maker, or manufacturer of the specific arti-
cles which shall be therein exposed for sale, except
such maker or manufacturer as hereinafter specified,
to barter, or open, set up, keep or use any booth, stall,
shop, office, store, warehouse or other building, yard
enclosure, vessel, or any other place or part of any
house, building, or other place, for the purpose of
selling by wholesale or retail, or bartering any dry
goods, groceries, imported dried fruit, glass, crocke-
