they may think just and proper, not exceeding ten per
centum.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That so much of the
tenth section of said act which makes it imperative
upon the sheriff of the said county to fully pay and
account to the treasurer of said county for the arrear-
ages of taxes which shall have been placed in his
hands on or before the fifteenth of July in each and
every year, be and the same is hereby repealed in so
far as the same refers to the time of paying to and ac-
counting to the treasurer of said county for the said
taxes in arrear, and the time for such payment is
hereby prolonged and extended to the first day of
December in each and every year.

SEC. 3 And be it enacted, That the treasurer of
said county, in settling with Pleasant Hunter, the for-
mer sheriff of said county, for the collection of the
taxes in arrear placed in his hands, shall allow to the
said Pleasant Hunter, the benefit of the first section of
this act, in adjusting his commissions for the collec-
tion of such taxes in arrears.

take effect from the date of its passage.

CHAPTER 298.

AN ACT to provide for the formation of corpora-
tions for the building of railroads in St. Marys'
county.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That whenever any seven or more free
white persons, citizens of the United States, and
majority of them citizens of St. Mary's county, Ma-
ryland are associated together or mean to associate
together for the purpose of building railroads with-
in the limits of said county and shall be desirous to
acquire and enjoy the powers and immunities of a
corporation or body politic in law, it shall and may
be lawful for such persons to prepare and execute
under their hands and seals an instrument of writing
specifying therein the object, articles, conditions, and
