AN ACT to extend the provisions of an act passed
at the January session eighteen hundred and fifty-
four, chapter two hundred and seventy-three, en-
titled, "An Act to provide a remedy against free
negroes who may hire for a stipulated period to
any person, and quit the service of such person af-
ter entering on the same; and to provide a reme-
dy against persons who may employ such free ne-
groes, with the knowledge that they had previous-
ly hired to another or engaged in another's ser-
vice."

Provisions of
second section
of act to apply.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the pro visions of the second sec-
tion of the said act of Assembly shall extend and be
applicable to all cases of the verbal hiring by free
negroes and the receipt by them of a portion of their
wages in advance, and proof of the said hiring and
receipt of money by the oath of the employer and
the evidence of some other person shall constitute
a prima facie case of hiring, and that in all such ca-
ses the provisions of the said act of Assembly shall
be as applicable in all other respects, as if the pre-
sent case had been included in the said original
act.
