WHEREAS, on the thirteenth day of January, eigh-
teen hundred and fifty five, we whose names are
hereinafter mentioned, associated ourselves together
by the name of the Stockholders of Anne Arundel
county Academy, the object of which association
was to purchase land and build a house sufficient
for an Academy; and whereas, stock was subscri-
bed to the amount of one thousand dollars, and one
half of said stock called in, and in that name a lot
of land, within half a mile of Millersville, in said
county, was secured by a deed of gift from Owen
Cecil, and a house erected for said purpose there-
on, and we have now a competent teacher and more
than twenty young men and ladies in attendance as
scholars; in view of the facts as set forth, we pray
your honorable body to grant us an act of incorpo-
ration as hereinafter set forth, and legalize our pre-
ceding acts by making the same capable of sueing
and being sued for all debts and other liabilities,
either for or against said association or contracted in
their name or for their use.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Philip M. Leakin, Wm. H. Bald-
win, R. J. Duvall, Owen Cecil, Wm. Jones, Basil D.
Hall, Benj. E. Gantt, P. W. Witwright, Jno. A. Bald-
win, Thos. P. Baldwin, Richard Baldwin, Geo. Mil-
ler, James F. Baldwin, James Rawlings, Brooke
Meade, B. M. Rhodes, Henry F. Turton, William
Woodward, William Garrett, Absalom Anderson, P.
P. Pendleton, James Turner, Thomas W. Hammond,
Dorsey Jacobs, John H. Brown, Edward Brown,
Henry H. Brown, William W. Watkins, William H.
Watkins, William H. Carter, Columbus Baldwin,
Summerfield Baldwin, Richard McGill, and all who
may hereafter become owners of stock in the academy,
with their successors, heirs and assigns, be and are
hereby created a corporation by the name of the
Stockholders of Anne Arundel County Academy, and
by that name may sue and be sued, answer and defend
in any court of law or equity, and may ordain and es-
tablish such by laws, rules, and regulations, as shall
appear necessary and proper for conducting the con-
