CHAPTER 194.

AN ACT to change the name of a certain village in
Caroline county, known by the name of Snow
Hill, to the name of Preston.

Passed Mar.
8, 1856.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assem-
bly of Maryland, That from and after the passage
of this act, the name of Snowhill, in Caroline coun-
ty, be and is hereby changed to that of Preston.

Name changed.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from and after the date of passage.

In force.

CHAPTER 195.

AN ACT more effectually to prevent Gambling.

8, 1856.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That if any person shall use or keep
a room, building, arbor, booth, shed, tenement, boat,
float or place to be used or occupied for gambling,
(which word here and elsewhere in this act, shall
embrace all insuring of or betting or wagering on lot-
tery tickets, or parts of lottery tickets, or numbers or
certificates of numbers of lottery tickets, either for-
eign or domestic or purporting so to be; also the re-
cieving any consideration for insuring, for or against
the drawing of any ticket, or tickets, in any lottery
whether authorised by the laws of this State, or not :
also the receiving any money, goods or thing in ac-
tion, in consideration of any agreement to repay any sum
or sums of money, or to deliver the same or any other
goods, or thing in action, if any ticket or tickets in
any lottery whatever, whether authorised by the laws
of this State or not, shall prove fortunate,or unfortunate,

or shall be drawn or not drawn, on any particular day, or
in any particular order, or otherwise howsoever; also
any promise or agreement to pay any sum of money, or
to deliver any goods or thing in action, or to do, or to
forbear to do anything for the benefit of any other
person or persons with or without consideration upon
