Theodore R. McKeldin, Governor 345
Whereas, The present State Tobacco Warehouse for the storage
of tobacco in hogsheads has been located in Baltimore City for over
one hundred years, historically because of its proximity to rail and
water transportation; and
Whereas, Today most tobacco is transported by truck, doing away
with the necessity for maintaining a warehouse in Baltimore City;
and
Whereas, The Legislative Council's Tobacco Committee after
consideration of the State warehouse, made a recommendation that
a new State warehouse be located in the tobacco growing counties of
Maryland; and
Whereas, In order to carry out this recommendation, it is neces-
sary that studies be made of the possible location of a new warehouse,
the factors affecting location, disposition of the present Baltimore
warehouse, the cost and preliminary plans for the new warehouse
and its financing, and any other relevant details, by the Department
of Public Improvements, with the assistance of the Maryland Tobacco
Authority and the State Tobacco Inspector; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the Depart-
ment of Public Improvements, with the assistance of the Maryland
Tobacco Authority, and the State Tobacco Inspector, be requested to
study the feasibility of locating a State Tobacco Warehouse in South-
ern Maryland; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Public Improvements be re-
quested to report the results of its findings and any plans and recom-
mendations to the Legislative Council by October 1, 1956.
