Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.
This bill was passed at the 1955 session of the General Assembly
and was vetoed by the Governor on April 28, 1955. Under the pro-
visions of Section 17 of Article 2 of the State Constitution, bills vetoed
after adjournment of the Legislature must be returned by the Gov-
ernor to the next regular or special session of the General Assembly.
The bill was repassed over the Governor's veto by the Senate on
February 7,1956, and by the House of Delegates on February 8,1956.
Under the constitutional provisions it becomes effective on June 1,
1956.

(House Bill 559)
AN ACT to add a new section to the Montgomery County Code
(1950 Edition), being Article 16 of the Code of Public Local Laws
of Maryland, title "Montgomery County", sub-title "Title 10.
Powers of County Council", sub-heading "Chapter 57. General
Powers", said new section to be known as Section 57-8 and to
follow immediately after Section 57-7, relating to a tobacco tax in
Montgomery County.
Section 1 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That a new section be and it is hereby added to the Montgomery
County Code (1950 Edition), being Article 16 of the Code of Public
Local Laws of Maryland, title "Montgomery County", sub-title
"Title 10. Powers of County Council", sub-heading "Chapter 57.
General Powers", said new section to be known as Section 57-8 and
to follow immediately after Section 57-7, and to read as follows:
57-8. The County Council for Montgomery County is hereby em-
powered and authorized to levy and impose a tax to be paid and
collected on all cigarettes, cigars, smoking tobacco and chewing
tobacco possessed or held in Montgomery County by any person,
firm or corporation for sale, at such rate as said County Council shall
from time to time determine, and to fix a penalty not in excess of
a fine of $1,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both
such fine and imprisonment for violation of the provisions of any
regulation or ordinance of said County Council adopted pursuant to
this section.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.
