in the City of Frederick for county and municipal taxation, in an
amount of at least twenty-five per centum (25%) of the total assessed
valuation and such a tax exemption as is provided in this sub-section
shall be mandatory in Washington County in the amount of at least
twenty-five per centum (25%) of the total assessed valuation.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1955.

CHAPTER 528
(House Bill 732)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Sub-section (g)
of Section 38 of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1954 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Compensation and
Duties", relating to the expense allowance for miles traveled by
the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriffs in Cecil County.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sub-section (g) of Section 58 of Article 87 of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1954 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title
"Compensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-
enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

38.

(g) Cecil County.—The Sheriff of Cecil County shall receive an
annual salary of $3,500 and $400 for expenses. Commencing with
the beginning of the next term of office, the Sheriff of Cecil County
shall receive an annual salary of $4,000, and no allowance for ex-
penses except as hereinafter provided. The Sheriff shall appoint a
first deputy Sheriff, who shall receive an annual salary of $2,600; and
a second deputy Sheriff, who shall receive an annual salary of $2,300.
The Sheriff and deputy Sheriffs shall be entitled to an expense allow-
ance for travel at the rate of seven cents ($.07) per mile actually
traveled, to be paid monthly, provided, that at the beginning of each
month the Sheriff and deputy Sheriffs shall file with the County Com-
missioners of Cecil County an affidavit stating the speedometer read-
ings on their respective vehicles as of the first and last days of the
preceding month, and provided further, that fifteen per centum of the
mileage submitted for each month shall be deemed to have been for
personal use for which there shall be no compensation,
[in connection
with the duties of his office, and they shall submit monthly vouchers,
stating such mileage under oath, to the county commissioners of Cecil
County.] The Sheriff's office shall also receive an appropriation of
$1,500, to be used for special investigations and employees, subject
to the approval of the county commissioners.
