CHARLES COUNTY AND TO SPECIAL AND DEPUTY
SHERIFFS THEREIN AND TO THEIR DUTIES AND COM-
PENSATION AND PROHIBITING ELECTIONEERING BY
SPECIAL OR OTHER DEPUTY SHERIFFS.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 38, sub-section (h) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1954 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-title "Com-
pensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
38. Salaries and expenses; deputies.
(h) Charles County.—(1) The sheriff of Charles County shall re-
ceive an annual salary of $3,600 [.] and he shall also be allowed
$900 per year as an expense allowance. He may appoint not more
than [six] eight full-time deputies at an annual

$3,400 per year. In addition to the above deputies,
the sheriff shall appoint one full-time deputy at a salary of $2,000 per
annum. ANY DEPUTY TO BE QUALIFIED FOR SUCH IN-
CREASE MUST HAVE AT LEAST TWO YEARS EXPERIENCE
IN SAID SHERIFF'S OFFICE. ANY SPECIAL DEPUTIES
SHALL BE APPOINTED ONLY WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND SHALL RECEIVE SUCH COM-
PENSATION AS SAID COMMISSIONERS SHALL DETERMINE.
(2) The county commissioners of Charles County are hereby au-
thorized to provide such equipment and other personnel as may be
requested by the sheriff for law enforcement at an annual cost

Such equipment and personnel shall consist of
a. Not more than four new automobiles.
b. Radio equipment; not more than four radio operators and com-
mitting magistrates.
c. Operating expenses of automobiles, radio equipment, office
supplies and other necessary equipment and supplies.
(D) INSURANCE.
(3) The sheriff's office shall be open twenty-four hours a day
every day, including Sundays and legal holidays. At least two
deputies, a radio operator and/or committing magistrate shall be on
duty at all times.
(4) SPECIAL OR DEPUTY SHERIFFS OF CHARLES COUNTY
AND ANY OTHER EMPLOYEE IN THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE
SHALL NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY ELECTIONEERING
EITHER WHILE USING COUNTY EQUIPMENT OR WHILE IN
