AN ACT to authorise the citizens of Newark, in Wor-
cester county, to elect a police or patrol officer in
said town.
|
|
|
Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, it is represented that the town of Newark,
in Worcester county, is nightly infested with gangs
of negroes, to the great injury and annoyance of the
peace and quiet of said town, and that there is no
constable residing nearer than three miles of said
town, and consequently cannot protect the citizens
thereof from the great annoyance; Therefore,

Authority to
elect patrol of-
ficer.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the citizens of Newark, Worces-
ter county, be, and they are hereby authorised to elect
such police or patrol officer, who shall have full power
to summons men to disperse such gatherings, and exer-
cise all the patrol duties in said town that are discharg-
ed by the constables of the county.

To elect bien-
nially.
|
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the citizens of said
town may, on the first Saturday of March and biennial-
ly thereafter, elect one police or patrol officer, to exer-
cise the duties and privileges above named; and said
officer shall receive such compensation for his services
as the commissioners of said county may allow; said
election to be held by one justice of the peace.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this act shall be in
full force from and after the date of its passage.
