CHAPTER 278.

AN ACT to amend and modify the present primary
school system of Charles county.

Commission-
ers.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That John G. Chapman, William B.
Stone, George Brent, Doctor William Queen and Doc-
tor Stonten W. Dent, be, and they are hereby consti-
tuted and appointed a board of school commissioners
for Charles county, with power to fill any vacancies
that may occur from time to time; it shall be the duty
of said commissioners to organize by the election of one
of their number to preside over their board, and said
board shall make such by-laws and regulations as they
may deem necessary for their government.

First meeting.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the first regular
meeting of said board shall be held on the first Tuesday
of September after their appointment, or as soon there-
after as convenient, at the court house, in Port Tobacco,
and quarterly thereafter; the president of the board
may call extra meetings whenever in his judgment the
business of the board requires it; a majority of the
board shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of
business.

Authority to
divide county
into school
districts.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the school com-
missioners aforesaid are hereby authorised and required
at their earliest convenience, to divide the county into
as many school district as in their judgment may be
necessary for public convenience and accommodation,

to number and clearly define by descriptive limits each
of said school districts, and from time to time create
new school districts, as necessity in their judgment may
require; and they shall sell and dispose of such school
houses us may become necessary, by the re-division of
said county into new school districts, and the proceeds
arising therefrom shall be appropriated to the school
fund of said county.

Trustees.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty
of the school commissioners aforesaid, at their first meet-
ing; after they have laid off and determined the number
of school districts in the county, and every two years
thereafter to appoint for each school district so laid off
and determined, five suitable men as trustees of such
school districts, who shall be notified of their appoint-
