report their proceedings to the commissioners' court of
said county, to be paid for as now provided by law ;
Provided, the cost of said lot, together with the erecting
said house, shall not exceed the sum of three hundred
dollars

Proviso.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That so soon as the
said school house is erected, it shall be deemed and con-
sidered a free school, and it is hereby placed on the
same footing, entitled to the same privileges, and sub-
ject to the same regulations as are now provided by law
for free schools in said county, and if the same shall be
completed before the period provided by law for the
election of a local board of trustees, then the general
board for said county shall appoint a local board to serve
until they are elected by the patrons and tax-payers of
said school, and it shall be their duty to employ a teacher
for said school, whose salary shall be paid as other
teachers of free schools in said county.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from its passage.


CHAPTER 171.

In force.

AN ACT to amend and alter the act passed at December
session, eighteen hundred and forty-seven, chapter
three hundred and eight, entitled an act to incorpo-
rate the Valley Bank of Maryland, at Hagerstown.

Mar. 10, 1854.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That Howard Kennedy, Alexander Neill,
junior, William E. Doyle, Peter Negley and George
Schley, be, and they are hereby appointed commission-
ers, in addition to those named in the third section of
the act passed at December session, eighteen hundred
and forty-seven, chapter three hundred and eight, en-
titled an act to incorporate the Valley Bank of Mary-
land, at Hagerstown.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That so much of sec-
tion third of said act, as requires subscription to the
