CHAP. 239.

pay for passing through said turnpike gate more than
once in twenty-four hours, and that the Legislature re-
serves the right to alter, amend or repeal this act at its
pleasure.

SEC. 12. And be it enacted, That this act shall take
effect from the passage thereof.

CHAPTER 238.

AN ACT to alter and change the name of William
Henry Shipley, of Carroll county, to William
Henry Gorsuch.

Name chang-
ed.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the name of William Henry Shipley, a citi-
zen of the State of Maryland, and a resident of Car-
roll county, be, and the same is hereby altered and
changed, to that of William Henry Gorsuch; and it
shall be lawful for the said William Henry Shipley, at
all times hereafter, to be called and known by, and
hold and use the name of William Henry Gorsuch,
and by that name shall have the same rights and privi-
leges as if he had always borne the name of William
Henry Gorsuch, to purchase, sell, convey, devise or re-
ceive by bequest any properly whatsoever; and may
sue and he sued, either at law or in equity, and have
and do, all, or any other acts or things that he might or
could have done under the name of William Henry
Shipley.

CHAPTER 239.

AN ACT to extend the Civil Jurisdiction of Justices

of the Peace, and to prescribe their powers and
duties.

extended.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

of Maryland, That the civil jurisdiction of justices of
the peace, be, and it is hereby extended to all cases for
the enforcement, of contracts, and to obtain redress for
wrongs, where the debt or damage laid or claimed shall
