the damages sustained by them respectively, if any,
according to the valuation made by said commission-
ers, and from and after said levy, the road that may be
located as aforesaid, shall be deemed and taken as a
public road, and kept in repair at the expense of the
county.

CHAP. 231.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the commissioners
shall take an oath that they will faithfully execute the
provisions of this act without partiality or prejudice,
and shall give at least ten days notice to the proprie-
tors of the lands over which said road may pass, by
advertisements set up in the neighborhood, before they
proceed to act.

CHAPTER 231.

Oath.

AN ACT to provide for the formation of Corpora-
tions for Moral, Scientific, Literary, Dramatic,
Agricultural or Charitable Purposes, and for the
Incorporation of Uniform Volunteer Companies,
Fire Engine or Hose Companies, and Benevolent,
Beneficial and Musical Associations.

WHEREAS, By the forty-seventh section of the third
article of the Constitution, it is provided, that corpora-
tions may be formed under general laws, but shall not
be created by special act, except for municipal pur-
poses, and in cases where, in the judgment of the
Legislature, the object of the corporation cannot be at-
tained under general laws; Therefore,

Preamble.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

of Maryland, That when any seven or more free white
persons, citizens of the United States, and a majority

of them citizens of this State, are associated, or mean
to associate for any moral, scientific, literary, dramatic,
agricultural or charitable purpose, or for the purpose of
forming; any uniform volunteer company, fire engine or
hose company, or beneficial, benevolent or musical
society or association, and shall be desirous to acquire
and enjoy the powers and immunities of a corporation,
or body politic, in law, it shall and may be lawful for
such persons to prepare and execute, under their hands
and seals, an instrument of writing, specifying therein
the objects, articles, conditions, and name, style or title,
under which they have associated, or mean to associate,
