CHAP. 175.

and they are hereby declared and constituted a body po-
litic or corporate, under the name and style of the Ha-
gerstown Female Seminary: and by that name shall
sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded, answer
and be answered, defend and be defended, in any of
the courts of law or equity in this State; shall have
and use a common seal, and the same change, break,
or renew at pleasure; receive, hold and possess proper-
ty, real, personal, or mixed, to the amount and for the
purpose hereinafter expressed; pass such by-laws, rules
and regulations as may be deemed necessary, not in-
consistent with this act, or the constitution and laws of
this State, and to perform all such other acts as may
rightfully appertain to them, consistently with the ob-
jects and powers herein expressed and conferred.

Object of in-
stitution.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the object of said
institution, or seminary, shall be the promotion of a
liberal female education.

Plan to be con-
ducted upon.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That said seminary shall
be established and conducted upon the plan of scho-
larship, to an amount not exceeding sixty thousand dol-
lars, each scholarship to be fixed at such sum as the
trustees, hereinafter provided for, shall designate, not
less than one hundred dollars; which scholarship,
except so much thereof as the trustees may deem it ex-
pedient to expend in the purchase of grounds and the
erection and furnishing of buildings for the seminary
and its professors, shall be invested in some safe mode
by the trustees to serve as an endowment fund, the in-
terest of which shall be applied to the support of the
professors and teachers of the institution, and in such
repairs, improvements, library and apparatus, as the
trustees may, from time to time, deem necessary and
proper.

Capable of
holding by
gift, &c.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That in addition to said
amount of scholarship, the said corporation shall be
capable of holding by gift, grant, bequest, or de-
vise, other property and funds, real, personal and mix-
ed, to an amount not exceeding, the annual value of,
ten thousand dollars, to be used for the general purposes

of said institution, and with power to sell, transfer, lease
and convey any part thereof.

Privileges of
subscriber for
scholarship.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That every subscriber
for scholarship in said seminary, shall have the right
and privilege of having educated in it one female pu-
pil for each scholarship he or she may hold, at all times
and free of charge, in such studies as shall not be de-
clared extra branches; but that all holders of scholar-
ship, shall pay for the instruction of their pupils in such
