mit to the field offi cers of his regiment or extra battalion,
(as the case may be, ) a full and fair statement of his ac-
counts as pay-master as aforesaid, pay overall balances re-
maining in his hands when demanded by his successor in
office, or by the person authorised to receive the same, and
in all things faithfully discharge the duties of his office.

1812.

47. AND BE IT ENACTED, That all money
hereby directed to be paid into the hands of the pay-mas-
ters of the several regiments or extra-battalions, shall be
appropriated to the use of the respective regiments or ex-
tra-battalions in the following manner, to wit: in the
first place, to defray the necessary expenses of the regi-
ment or extra-battalion, and of the several companies com-
posing the same; and after such necessary expenses are
discharged, then the balance to be applied by the field
officers of the respective regiments or extra-battalions, to
the purchase of muskets and accoutrements necessary
thereto; which, when purchased, shall be distributed by
the said field officers among such persons in their respec-
tive regiments and extra-battalions as are adjudged to be
too indigent to purchase the same at their own expense;
which said money in the hands of the said pay-masters
shall only be drawn therefrom by an order or orders in
writing under the hand of the field officers of the regi-
ment, or any two of them5 or under the hands of the ma-
jor and two captains of an extra-battalion, specifying the
purpose for which the same is drawn.

48. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the command-
ants of regiments, extra-battalions, and independent corps
are hereby authorised to establish within their several dis-
tricts some secure place of deposit for the arms and ac-
coutrements belonging to said regiment, extra-battalion
or independent corps; and they are empowered, if they
shall deem it necessary and proper, to order each com-
mandant of a company within their district, to return
their arms and accoutrements to such place of deposit
after each and every parade; and they the said com-
mandants of regiments, extra-battalions and indepen-
dent corps are hereby required, under a penalty of fifty
dollars, to employ some person to keep said arms and ac-
coutrements in good order, and arrange them in such a
manner, so that each commandant of a company shall re-
ceive the same arms which are or may be first held by such
company; and said armourer or person so attending.,
shall be paid a reasonable sum for his services, out of the
fines of the regiment, extra-battalion, independent corps
or company, (as the case may be; ) and all commandants
of companies who shall be ordered by their superior offi-
