An act for the protection of persons carrying Wood,
for sale, to the City of Baltimore.
|
|
|
Penalty for
over-charging
wharfage on
wood.
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That ally person who shall hereafter
charge, exact or receive more than six and a quarter
cents upon each cord of wood landed upon any wharf
in the city of Baltimore, shall, upon complaint made
before any justice of the peace in the city of Balti-
more, and conviction thereof, he fined not more than
ten dollars, and not loss than five dollars, in each and
every case, one-half to the use of the informer, who
is hereby declared to be and made a competent wit-
ness in such case, and the other to the State, to be
recovered as fines and forfeitures are now recoverable,
when imposed by the county courts of this State.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That from and after the
passage of this act, it shall and may be lawful for any
person or persons carrying wood to Baltimore, for sale,
to land the same upon the State's wharves, whenever
permitted so to do by any Tobacco Inspector in the

warehouse to which the wharf is attached; provided,
such permission shall not interfere with that portion
of the said public, wharves that may, by the said To-
bacco Inspectors, be set apart in obedience to a law
passed this session, for the use of boats laden with
tobacco, upon paying therefor the sum of six and one-
quarter cents per cord, to the said Tobacco Inspector,
to be by him returned to and paid into the Treasury
of this State, and the Treasurer is hereby authorised
and required to allow said Inspectors twenty per cent
commission thereon, and the said respective Tobacco
Inspectors shall have entire power and control over
the 'said State's wharves, opposite their respective in-
spection warehouses, so far as the provisions of this
act requires, and they are hereby authorised and re-
quired to rent, temporarily, the use of the said wharves
to persons carrying and landing wood, at the rate of
six and one-quarter cents per cord for the wood so
landed, at such times as the same may be done with-
out prejudice to the landing tobacco thereon.

hucksters.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That from and after the
expiration of the existing licenses there shall he
charged, on each license to wood hucksters, the ad-
ditional sum of fifty dollars.
