CHAPTER 301.

1850.

An act for the Incorporation of West River Division,
number fifty-six, of the Sons of Temperance.

Incorporated,
&c.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Gassaway Winterson, Benjamin O.
Hara, and others, officers and members of West River
Division, number fifty-six, of the Order of the Sons
of Temperance, of the State of Maryland, and their
successors, be and they are hereby incorporated and
made a body politic and corporate, by the name and
number of West River Division, number fifty-six,
of the Sons of Temperance, of the State of Maryland,
and by that name may sue and be sued, plead and be
impleaded, and have a common seal, and the same,
at their pleasure, 10 alter, and be entitled to use all
the powers and privileges incident to such corpora-
tion.

May hold prop-
erty.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said corpora-
tion shall be capable of taking and holding real and
personal estate, not exceeding in value the sum of
fifteen thousand dollars, which shall never be di-
vided among the members of the corporation, but
shall descend to their successors, for the benevolent
relief of the sick and distressed, the education of the
orphans of its members, and for the promotion of
those purposes, and the cause of temperance gene-
rally.

May establish
bye-laws.

Proviso.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That this corporation
shall have power to make bye-laws, and the same to
alter and amend at their pleasure; provided, they
do not conflict with the laws of the State of Maryland,
the laws of the United States, or the laws of the Grand
Division of the Sons of Temperance of the State of
Maryland.

In force.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That this act of incor-
poration shall inure for forty years from its passage,
and that the Legislature reserves to itself the right to
alter and amend this act of incorporation at pleasure.

Banking forbid.

SEC. 6. And be it enacted, That nothing in this
act be so construed as to authorise the said corpo-
ration to issue any note, token, device, scrip, or other
evidence of debt, to be used as a currency.
